Hannah Candle in Noir

A stunning piece for any home decor, the Hannah candle, from Brooklyn-based artist Bonam Kim's namesake collection, features a female silhouette reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture.

"In Korean, Hannah means 'one'; for Judaism, heavenly grace; in Arabic, it represents happiness; within Japan, a flower; while in Maori, it's the act of glowing. I designed my candle to honor that immanent beauty and humanity." - Bonam Kim, on the collection

  • Made from an organic mixture of bee and soy wax.
  • Unscented.
  • Approximate 8 hour burn time.
  • Size: 7.5" tall

The white film that may be present on the Noir candles (as emphasized in the photos through increased clarity) is called Bloom. Bloom is the white “finish” that appears on the surface of beeswax, and is caused by the softer oils in the wax coming to the surface. Some actually prefer the look of the Bloom as it gives the candle an additional bit of character and age. It is not harmful and can easily be removed with warm air of a dryer or by simply gently buffing with your hand. Please note that when using a blow dryer, be sure to keep the dryer at a distance to prevent the melting of the wax form.

Bonam Kim is a sculptor based in Brooklyn, NY. She received a BFA and MFA degree from Hong-ik University in Seoul, South Korea. In 2016, she completed her second MFA in sculpture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She was featured as an emerging artist from DongBangYoGae, Art in Culture magazine in Seoul. Also, she was nominated for the Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship. She has participated in the residency program at Trestle Art Space (June - December, 2016) and was awarded the Stutzman Family Foundation Graduate Fellowship for her residency at the Vermont Studio Center (February, 2017).

Since moving from Seoul, experiences of displacement and Kim's struggle with cultural identity causes her to see things differently. In this unfamiliar space, her sense of self is both threatened and emancipated. She cannot escape the need for psychological dependency, nostalgic desires and memories that seem to guarantee security and comfort. This is where Kim's work starts.
